Violent Night in Indianapolis: 12 Hours of Shootings Leave 2 Dead, Multiple Injured

A wave of gun violence across Indianapolis’ east and south sides left two people dead, two critically wounded, and several others injured in a chaotic 12-hour span between Saturday evening and early Sunday morning.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD), at least six shootings occurred between midnight and Sunday morning, following two separate shootings on Saturday night.

The Marion County Coroner’s Office identified the two homicide victims as:

  • Cornelius Gray, 23, who was shot and killed at a McDonald’s on East 38th Street.
  • Theodore Helpling III, 43, who was found fatally shot near an abandoned liquor store on East New York Street.

Saturday Night Violence

  • 7:00 p.m. – A victim arrived at Riley Hospital for Children with a gunshot wound. IMPD has not released the age of the victim, but they were reported to be in critical condition.
  • 9:00 p.m.Fatal shooting at McDonald’s (2425 E. 38th St.) – Officers found Cornelius Gray suffering from a gunshot wound. He later died at the hospital.

Sunday: A Deadly Start to the Morning

  • 1:00 a.m.East 40th StreetThree people were shot and taken to different hospitals. All were reported to be in stable condition.
  • 2:30 a.m.Abandoned liquor store (4215 E. New York Street)Theodore Helpling III was found dead, and another victim was critically injured.
  • 2:50 a.m.N. LaSalle Street – One person was shot, condition unknown.
  • 3:15 a.m.Brad’s Brass Flamingo Nightclub (4011 Southeastern Ave.) – Another victim shot, but in stable condition.
  • 4:00 a.m.South Randolph Street (2500 block) – One victim shot, reported in stable condition.
  • 4:15 a.m.Congaree Drive (Far East Side) – Another shooting, with the victim in stable condition.

No Arrests Yet – IMPD Seeking Public Assistance

As of Monday, IMPD has not announced any arrests related to these incidents. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact IMPD or Crime Stoppers.

The string of shootings marks another disturbing spike in gun violence across Indianapolis, with law enforcement under increasing pressure to address the growing crisis.
